The oxygen is allowed to pass, burning up hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The result left over is water vapor and carbon dioxide.

The exhaust manifold collects the leftover gases and pushes them down the exhaust pipe and out the tail pipe. The muffler and resonator cut engine noise too while ensuring steady airflow through the system.
